Tim Ferriss Discusses Turning 40 and His Personal Battles

I came across this article a while ago and thought it would be worthwhile sharing. It was posted by Tim Ferriss on LinkedIn towards the end of last year and casts him in a different light, reflecting on his personal battles on the way to 40.

The article shares a great example of the power of resilience despite the challenges along the way:

“Truth be told, I never thought I’d make it to 40. My first book was rejected 27 times by publishers. The things that worked out weren’t supposed to work, so I realized on my birthday: I had no plan for after 40.”

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield – Book Review

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield – Book Review

I first came across Steven Pressfield’s book the War of Art, sometime ago. I think it was mentioned in Tim Ferriss’ Tools of Titans. I subsequently heard Tim discuss it during one of his podcasts. He devoted a few moments to the book and spoke about how the War of Art had delivered him from a creative slump. At that moment, I made a note to check it out as soon as I could.

The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles, is all about helping you get over own b.s. to reach your best creative self. For most of us, it’s a simple concept which is infinitely more difficult to execute. Pressfield approaches this issue by splitting the book into 3 sections, namely, Book One: Resistance – Defining the Enemy; Book Two: Combating Resistance – Turning Pro; and Book Three: Beyond Resistance – The Higher Realm. Resistance is the term he uses to describe the destructive force that kills our creativity and prevents us from achieving what we set out to each day. 3 Great Motivational Podcasts to Supercharge Your 2018!!!

I know, I know… There are podcasts discussing pretty much every topic these days. In the motivation / mindset / daily inspiration space there is no doubt tens if not hundreds of different podcasts to choose from. I thought to share with you 3 great podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis to support my mindset and keep me on the right track (no pun intended).

Truthfully, I just happened to stumble across these three presenters but now keep going back, given the quality of what they share and the caliber of the people they have on. If you make these a part of your regular routine in 2018, I think they could help you immensely with your mindset and staying motivated. Just remember, the best time to experience a podcast, is when you think you need it the least. Enjoy!

The Richest People of All Time – Hall of Fame

The Richest People of All Time – Hall of Fame

Given all the recent talk about Jeff Bezos becoming the world’s richest person, I thought it would be worthwhile looking back through history to work out who have been the richest people of all time to grace this Earth.

Conveniently, I came across the following graphic from Visual Capital, which does the job for us. If you haven’t come across Visual Capital, they do a great job of sharing quality content in graphical format. I would highly recommend subscribing if you haven’t done so previously. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell – Book Review

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell – Book Review

Malcolm Gladwell is a writer who I became familiar with through Tim Ferriss. I really enjoyed his profile in Tools of Titans so was keen to check out his works. The Tipping Point is simply the first work of Gladwell’s that I picked up and I must say I enjoyed it immensely.

Let’s Get Viral!

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell, focuses on that moment when some ideas, products and social movements “tip” from being niche followings to becoming mass movements. In doing so, Gladwell provides a framework for entrepreneurs, business folk and everyone in between to follow in terms of pushing their own concepts towards a tipping point. From Marine to the Dark Side – A User’s Guide

I know Star Wars can be a polarizing topic and Kylo Ren even more so. But long before becoming Ben Solo in a galaxy far, far away, Adam Driver was a marine plying his trade with 1/1 Weapons Company at Camp Pendleton, California.

I only know because I stumbled across this gem of a TED talk which chronicles the journey from his hometown of Mishawaka in Northern Indiana to the dark side. From aborted acting career to being galvanized by the events of 9/11, Adam shares his experience of becoming a marine and the “complex transition” back to civilian life. He goes on to discuss his nonprofit organization, Arts in the Armed Forces, to bring the raw power of the theater to military personnel.  He sums up his motive to do so as follows:

“…self-expression is just as valuable a tool as a rifle on your shoulder.”

In keeping with the theme of bringing theater to new audiences, Adam’s talk is followed by a performance of Marco Ramirez’s quirky “I am not Batman” by Jesse J. Perez and Matt Johnson. There’s a twist at the end which I didn’t see coming!

I hope you enjoy 🙂

Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss Book Review

Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss Book Review

Like a lot of people, I was a big fan of the 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss but wasn’t sure what to expect when I first came across Tools of Titans. Given how much I enjoyed his first book, his podcasts and 5-Bullet Friday emails, I put in my pre-order for Tools of Titans and waited eagerly.

I must say I have not been disappointed! Boasting over 700 pages, Tools of Titans is jam-packed with tools, tips and advice from nearly 200 world-class performers including Robert Rodriguez, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tony Robbins, Malcolm Gladwell, Kevin Kelley, Peter Thiel, Chris Sacca, Jocko Willink and Tara Brach.
